Nawfal Clinics – Lebanon

“Speech is power, speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel”. Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Eugénie Hélou, Speech and Language Therapist and Pathologist, obtained a master degree from the Lebanese University in 2012 (License Maitrisée). She currently works at Nawfal Clinics Beirut branch.

She worked in Lebanon, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, with patients covering different ages and different pathologies:

  • Communication and Oral Language delay.

  • Learning disabilities: Dyslexia, Dysorthographia and Dyscalculia.

  • Voice disorders.

  • Stuttering.

  • Hearing Impairment and Cochlear Implant.

  • Mental Retardation.

  • Swallowing, Drinking or Eating difficulties.

Eugenie supported and supervised newly qualified speech and language therapists (University of Saint Joseph pre-graduate’s students).

Mrs. Helou assesses a patient's needs before developing individual treatment program corresponding to the case. Treatment plans often involve other people with whom the patient has a close relationship (Parents, teachers…).

In her role as rehabilitation clinician, Eugenie has many tasks to work on:

  • She assesses and treats patient's developmental speech and communication difficulties/disorders.

  • She assesses communication environment.

  • She assesses and treats swallowing and communication difficulties arising from a range of causes, e.g. congenital problems (such as cleft palate) or acquired disorders after a stroke or injury.

  • She devises implements and revises relevant treatment programs.

  • She monitors and evaluates patient’s progress.

  • She works with patients on a one-to-one basis to deliver therapy.

  • She writes and maintains confidential patient case notes and reports, as well as information for patients and other professionals.

  • She works with others to improve the effectiveness of service delivery (doctor [neurologist, ORL, Ophthalmologist…], psychologist, psychotherapist, psychomotor therapist …)

Therapy is individual and sessions are 30 to 45 minutes according to the case.

Eugénie has a good communication and listening skills to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds and to motivate patients and gain trust. Some patients may be uncooperative because they are frightened, frustrated or disorientated by their situation.

She has patience as the progress may be slow, involving repetitive exercises to aid patients who have problems memorizing, processing and retaining information.

Mrs. Helou implements creativity to design programs appropriate to different learning styles and communication issues; team working skills to interact with other professionals; and flexibility to deal with a range of patients in various situations.

“The earlier that the intervention starts for your child, the quicker that the disorder can be addressed and corrected.”
